A Light-Filled House with a View

When Liz, an interior designer, took on the challenge of building her dream house on a difficult site with amazing views, the result is a stunning home and a great example of contemporary design both inside and out.

Designing her Dream Home

Liz Balbirnie of Habu Interior Design knew exactly what she wanted when she created her spectacular house in Howth.

When the offer of a site on a hillside that took in views of Dublin bay came up Liz was excited by the prospect of designing her dream home.

In order to take in the stunning views out to Ireland’s Eye and Lambay Island Liz decided to put all the living space at the top, with bedrooms underneath.

Contemporary Design

Liz made a model of the home when she was designing it and is proud that no alterations were made to the design. This sped up the building process significantly.

The combination of the glass and open tread staircase ensures a good flow through the upper and lower spaces.

The house is cost effective to run and is a great example of contemporary design both inside and out.

 

Walls of Glass to Enjoy the View

As the planners put a limit on the ratio of windows to walls Liz saw no point having windows in the back of the house on the lower floor, facing into the hill.   This is where the bedrooms, bathrooms and a gym are located.

Meanwhile upstairs the space is open-plan, and comprises a kitchen with an island, a dining table, and a comfortable living area.

So Liz concentrated on having plenty of glazing in this upper level, where they could enjoy the stunning views.

As well as walls of glass, she has tons of skylights, so there is light everywhere.

Jet Black Windows & Doors

Liz’s contemporary style is expressed throughout with the use of a monochromatic colour scheme.

She opted for Carlson’s Aluclad range for her Windows and Sliding Glass Doors.  In keeping with her monochromatic colour scheme she chose the colour Jet Black (RAL 9005) – they make a very striking statement.

Liz’s design included everything from the furniture, curtains, upholstery and paint colours.

Liz has very successfully managed to combine a glamorous and contemporary, yet cosy home – a culmination of everything she has learned in her very successful 30-plus-year career as an interior designer.
